Getting Business Done in Our New Virtual Workplace

Liveoak recently hosted our first virtual business panel on the topic of getting business done in our new virtual workplace. We were fortunate to have three financial services thought leaders on our panel: Lisa Kottler, Rob Stanley and Mark Rieder.

Lisa Kottler is a retirement services industry expert and has served in sales and senior executive level roles at Voya, Prudential and NFP.  She recently obtained her Master of Science in Technology Commercialization at the University of Texas and is now consulting for financial services and fintech companies. She helps companies take a fresh look at business models and fintech technology applications.

Rob Stanley has been in the financial services industry for 25+ years. Rob spent 18 years at John Hancock and was most recently Vice President of Retirement Plan Sales Operations and Infrastructure. Today he is running a consulting practice and helping enterprises to implement and adopt technology. His expertise is in identifying cost efficiency, meeting today’s compliance standards and helping businesses move to a mobile workforce.

Mark Rieder has been in the financial services industry for 24 years and is currently the Head of Innovation at NFP, a global insurance brokerage that specializes in employee benefits, P & C, wealth management and retirement. Mark’s focus is on campaigning for change, helping folks realize that change is necessary and rethinking the way business is done. Mark’s perspective is global and he has the ability to recognize both the problems and solutions for the small to mid-sized market.

The topic of getting back to business is an important conversation. The world has changed and business has changed. Employees are remote and customers are remote too. How do we still get business done? Particularly for companies that are in financial services and have paperwork with heavy compliance and security requirements.

Lisa asks the panelists: Pre-pandemic – how did you see companies in where they were with regards to digital transformation?

Rob: All the companies have been focused on digitization. It was top of mind but not the highest priority. Most of the focus was on the customer and how they appeared to the customer. They were not focused on the whole process- just the front end. They were not integrated end-to-end. Firms that were focused on end-to-end did better in the pandemic.

Mark: Technology discussions were in the boardroom and with leadership but not necessarily all employees and stakeholders. The ecosystem is defined as: industry, buyer and innovators (start-up community). Without willing participants, it is hard to enact change. They did not want to fix things that were not broken, they were comfortable. Catastrophic changes forced necessity. The buyers have advanced 5+ years in 5+ weeks. Hyper speed.
